Five-day mail delivery for households

The Postal Service currently delivers to more than 150 million residential addresses, and that number will grow as the population grows. At the same time, Americans are projected to use the mail less as electronic means of commerce and communication are used more widely.

What this means is that the average American is getting and sending far less mail than they used to, and the Postal Service is delivering far less to every door and mailbox.

As a result of the financial strains caused by these trends, the Postal Service is planning to eliminate Saturday mail deliveries to street addresses during the week of August 5, 2013. We will, however, continue to deliver packages six days a week.

So, what do residential customers need to know about the possible implementation of a five-day mail delivery schedule?

For detailed information about the implications of this plan for you, the Postal Service has created a planning guide for households, as well as a set of frequently asked questions.
