USPS selected employer of the year: Postal Service employee also recognized

Spring 2007 issue of Careers & the disABLED magazine. The nation’s first and only career-guidance and recruitment magazine for people with disabilities has named the USPS a Public-Sector Employer of the Year.

The Spring 2007 issue of Careers & the disABLED magazine also recognized Betty Henderson, Philadelphia supervisor of Distribution Operations, for her work on coordinating activities between the Deaf and Disabilities Awareness Group and her mail processing group. The magazine said Henderson — who is also deaf — was “assertive and confident and ensures that she communicates effectively with the Philadelphia team.”

The Postal Service received the award for its “progressive efforts to recruit, hire and promote people with disabilities,” the article said. Additionally, the magazine’s readers chose USPS as one of the top five employers where its readers would most like to work.

The magazine highlighted the Postal Service’s Video Remote Interpreting and Video Relay Service — two forms of Web-based sign language interpreting technology — as examples of programs designed to make sure that all employees have an equal opportunity to participate in every aspect of employment. Both systems are available to more than 1,100 deaf and hard-of-hearing postal employees.
