A provision of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act requires the Office of Inspector General (OIG) to assess the progress the Postal Service has made in improving safety and reducing workplace injuries. The Postal Service is a safer place to work, thanks to its partnership with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
An OIG review of the fiscal year 2005 and 2006 injury reduction goals shows the Postal Service exceeded the OSHA national average five-year goal by seven percent. According to the Department of Labor, the partnership with the Postal Service is one of OSHA’s best in terms of injury and illness reductions.
The OIG also reported the Postal Service identified opportunities for making further progress in meeting its goals. This includes partnerships and agreements with its four major unions to work together to improve workplace safety.
