USPSNEWS@WORK > A golden seat belt
Deer Park, NY, Letter Carrier Gwendolyn Romero was stopped at a light when a van with failed brakes collided with her postal vehicle. Romero’s truck flipped onto its left side and careened into eight other vehicles.
Romero was uninjured from the crash. But she was suspended, strapped to her seat by the seat belt.
After the accident, Long Island District Safety Manager of Safety Blaise Gemellaro presented Romero with the National Safety Council’s Golden Belt Award. “Without her seat belt, the impact alone could have tossed Gwendolyn around inside the vehicle,” Gemellaro said. “She could even have been thrown from the truck. But she had her seat belt on, and that kept her from being seriously injured.”
Romero agreed. “I’m just happy to be alive,” she said.
