June is Men’s Health Month, which aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues and health care needs.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12 percent of men who are 18 and older are in fair or poor health (see cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/mens-health.htm). Over 36 percent of men who are 20 and older are obese, while hypertension is found in a third of men in this age group. Heart disease and cancer are among the leading causes of death in men.
Here are some tips for men who want to take control of their health:
n Get screening tests.
n Make sure you are up-to-date on your vaccinations.
n Seek help for depression, and familiarize yourself with the symptoms of hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
n Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
