Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee celebrates 50th anniversary

In 1957, Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield, in an effort to encourage citizen involvement in postal policy, created the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC).

This year, CSAC is observing half a century as guardian and protector of the Postal Service’s stamp selection and design process. Over the years, its members have included such well-known Americans as artist Andrew Wyeth, novelist James Michener, actor Karl Malden and sports commentator Richard “Digger” Phelps.

CSAC operates largely behind the scenes, acting as an independent buffer between the PMG and the public in the often intense campaigns for stamp designations. Its charter mandates the committee to provide USPS a “breadth of judgment and depth of experience” in designating stamp designs.
