SITKA, AK – The Postal Service received notice on May 10 from the owner of the Pioneer Contract Post Office at 338 Lincoln St., Sitka, AK, that they will no longer provide postal services effective close of business on May 11.
The Postal Service was unable to come to an agreement on a new contract. Unfortunately, the offer received was substantially higher than the previous contract and when compared with other similar Contract Post Offices. Given the Postal Service’s significant and continued fiscal challenges, a business decision was made to relocate to the nearby Sitka Main Post Office.
As a result, all services at the Pioneer Contract Post Office are being immediately relocated to the nearby Sitka Main Post Office at 1201 Sawmill Creek Rd. Retail hours at the Main Post Office are Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Due to the close proximity of the Main Post Office, which has plenty of room to accommodate the additional Post Office Boxes and retail business, the USPS will not be looking for another contract location.
“The Postal Service apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates our customers’ patience as we make the transition to the Main Post Office,” said Manager Post Office Operations Dawn Acosta. “We look forward to serving them at the Main Post Office. Pioneer Post Office Box customers will now have 24 hour access to Post Office Boxes, and keep the same mailing address and keys.”
Approximately 300 customers had Post Office Boxes at the contract location.
Some convenient options for buying stamps include Stamps By Mail (ask your clerk or carrier for a form), Stamps By Phone 1-800-STAMP-24 (1-800-782-6724), and the 24/7 online Post Office at usps.com where customers can buy stamps, change their address, and much more. For more information about postal products and services, customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) or visit the Postal Service online at usps.com.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
