Richardson to Take Oath of Office As Birmingham’s 31st Postmaster

Birmingham, ALJohn Richardson, Jr. will take the Oath of Office as the 31st Postmaster of Birmingham, AL, on Friday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m. His installation ceremony will take place at the Vestavia Hill Library in the Forest, 1221 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hill, AL 35216.

As Postmaster, Richardson oversees postal operations in the City of Birmingham. He is responsible for retail and delivery operations at 23 facilities where over 800 employees work.

Richardson began his 32-year postal career as a Letter Carrier in Birmingham, and has worked his entire career in the local area. Early in his career, he was promoted to Supervisor, Customer Services  in the City of Birmingham. He later assumed the position of Manager, Customer Services, and served  in this role in almost all of the larger Post Offices — including the Center Point Station, Downtown Carrier Facilities, Forestdale Station, Green Springs Station, and River Run/Mountain Brook Station — within the city. He also was Postmaster, Bessemer, AL.

Throughout his career, Richardson accepted special assignments of increased responsibility, including Manager, Post Office Operations and Officer In Charge (OIC) in Birmingham. He has served on the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Joint Safety Task Force and is the Postal Co-Chair for the Greater Birmingham Postal Customer Council (GBPCC), which recently certified as a Platinum status PCC. Richardson is Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt Certified and has also completed the U.S. Postal Service’s Management Leadership Program (MLP).

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
