Chelsea, AL — The U.S. Postal Service has announced its decision to proceed with its proposal to relocate retail services at the Chelsea, AL Main Post Office, 16738 Hwy 280, Chelsea, AL 35043-8308. However, at this time, a suitable location has not yet been identified.
The Postal Service must relocate because the current location is too small to adequately conduct operations. The Postal Service will provide the same services at the new location as currently provided to our customers at the existing location. Our goal is to select a new customer service location as close as possible to the current site. The Postal Service will continue to offer retail services at the existing Chelsea Post Office until the replacement facility is identified and is operational.
The Postal Service carefully considered the concerns expressed at the August 18, 2020 community meeting at Chelsea City Hall, as well as the comments received after the meeting. This decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. To be self-sustaining, the Postal Service makes decisions that ensure adequate and affordable postal services as efficiently and as economical as possible.
