USPS Unveils High-Speed Package Sorting Machine in Avondale

New Technology Doubles Capacity, Boosts Efficiency by 75%

AVONDALE, AZ — The U.S. Postal Service unveiled a cutting-edge package sorting machine at the Regional Processing and Distribution Center (RPDC) in Avondale on August 7, marking a major milestone in its nationwide modernization effort. The new Matrix East/West Sorter (MEWS) can process up to 50,000 packages per hour—more than 1 million daily—doubling the facility’s capacity and increasing efficiency by 75%.

This high-speed system is part of USPS’s 10-year transformation strategy, which includes $40 billion in investments to upgrade facilities, improve delivery speed, and strengthen service reliability across the country.

“This isn’t just about technology—it’s about delivering better service to our customers and empowering our employees,” said Sunny Kuruvilla, Executive Plant Manager. “With over 640,000 Postal Service employees committed to serving the public, innovations like the MEWS system help us work smarter, faster, and more reliably than ever before.”

Local and regional USPS leaders hosted a media event to showcase the new equipment, offering live demonstrations and guided tours of the upgraded facility. Subject matter experts explained how the MEWS system works and its impact on delivery performance for Arizona residents and businesses.

The RPDC in Avondale is one of many USPS facilities receiving major upgrades as part of the organization’s push to become the nation’s end-to-end carrier of choice. To date, USPS has invested nearly $19 billion in its processing, transportation, and delivery networks.

These improvements are helping build a high-performing, financially stable Postal Service—one that’s equipped to provide world-class service for decades to come.
