RICHMOND, CA — On Thursday, January 17, 2019, Sunil Chanan will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1900 when Richmond appointed its first Postmaster, Lyman H. Naugle.
Chanan will raise his right hand to take the official Oath of Office as the new Postmaster of Richmond at a 10:00 a.m. ceremony at the Richmond Post Office, 535 Appian Way, El Sobrante, CA 94803. Manager of Post Office Operations Cedric Brown will administer the oath.
Chanan, 47, began his U.S. Postal Service career 14 years ago as a letter carrier in Emeryville. He went on to become a supervisor and then manager in Berkeley. Chanan boosted his skills as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Danville before taking on the even larger role as a Manager of Post Office Operations in the Bay-Valley District. Chanan served as the OIC at the Richmond Post Office prior to officially being promoted as the Postmaster.
Chanan states that as Postmaster he intends to focus on “Teaching, inspiring and motivating my team and provide reliable and efficient mail service.”
He resides in Rodeo with his wife Nina, and their 19-year-old twins Anubhav and Anurag. In his spare time, he enjoys watching basketball, playing Cricket and also teaching children how to play the sport.
Additionally, Chanan likes to stay active in his community and frequently participates in various charity walks.
As the Richmond Postmaster, Chanan oversees 200 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of over 200,000 pieces to 63,964 addresses, 109 delivery routes and 4,697 Post Office Boxes.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
