Joseph M. La Spina to be Sworn in as 30th Postmaster of Salinas

SALINAS, CA — On Thursday, January 31, 2019, Joseph M. La Spina will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1854 when James Bryant Hill was appointed the first Salinas Postmaster.

La Spina will raise his right hand to take the official Oath of Office as the new Postmaster of Salinas at the 10:00 a.m. ceremony at the John Steinbeck Station Post Office, 100 W. Alisal St., Salinas, CA 93901.

La Spina began his U.S. Postal Service career 20 years ago as a casual city carrier in Las Vegas. He carried mail for 13 years before deciding to go into management. La Spina cultivated his skills from supervisor to Manager of Customer Service before being selected as the Salinas Postmaster.

As the Postmaster of Salinas, La Spina hopes to bridge gaps between the Postal Service and the community he serves. “Being a postmaster means being involved in the community and building relationships,” said La Spina. Additionally, he’s focused on providing timely and accurate delivery for every postal customer in Salinas.

La Spina resides in Salinas with his wife Katherine and 12 year-old son Michael. His adult children are Jon 28, Ariana 27, Anthony 24, Joey 24 and Veronica 22.  In his spare time, he enjoys watching football and enjoying his young son driving a Jr. Dragster NHRA at top speeds over 75 mph.  La Spina also volunteers with the Knights of Columbus.

As Postmaster of Salinas, La Spina oversees 198 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of more than 193,065 pieces to 58,910 addresses over 76 delivery routes and 7,128 Post Office Boxes.

Manager of Post Office Operations Cedric Brown will administer the official oath of office.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
