Background:
Did you know that nearly 1 in 6 children live in households that are at risk of hunger? More than 12 million children are at risk of not knowing where or when they will get their next meal. And, across the United States nearly 41 million Americans face hunger on any given day.
The timing of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is crucial. Food banks and pantries across the nation and in the Bay Area often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, leaving them with low food supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available for children in need.
Since the campaign began in 1993, the NALC, with the help of volunteers in over 10,000 communities nationwide, have collected an excess of 1.6 billion pounds of food through the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Thanks to the collective efforts made by groups and business organizations joining the NALC, this one-day drive has kept many food banks shelves across the country from becoming bare. Last year alone a total of 71.6 million pounds of non-perishable goods were collected and donated nationwide.
USPS Representatives will host the kick-off for this year’s food drive at the Mill Valley Post Office with support from 2nd District Congressman Jared Huffman, Vice Mayor Sashi McEntee, North Bay Labor Council President Jerry Anderson and San Francisco Marin Food Bank representative Debbi Bellush. There will be a keynote presentation and information on how to help raise awareness of the drive and help local Bay Area families.
The 27th annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is Saturday, May 11, 2019. Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave their non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 11, before their letter carrier arrives. In the days leading up to the food drive, letter carriers will be delivering special bags along with your mail that may be used to make donations. Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community churches, food banks and food pantries for distribution.
