FIVE SAN JOSE LETTER CARRIERS JOIN MILLION MILE CLUB

Employees honored for each driving one million accident-free miles

SAN JOSE, CA — Driving can be a challenging task on its own, let alone driving one million miles without getting into a car accident. Five mail carriers at the Robertsville Post Office in San Jose did just that and will have their remarkable feat honored during a special ceremony on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at 8:00 AM, at the Robertsville Station Post Office, 1175 Branham Lane, in San Jose.

The five mail carriers who are all women – Edith Ereno-Chacon, Yuru Chien, Margaret Morrill, Jean Paras and Christina Fanthorphe – will be inducted into the National Safety Council “Million Mile Club” – a status meaning they’ve served the U.S. Postal Service for more than 30 years and driven a million miles without a preventable accident.

It is all a matter of mindset, according to Margaret Morrill, “It takes a second to buckle up. A second to look both ways and a second to save a life. A safety second can last a lifetime.” Jean Paras said, “Before you do it, take time to think through it.” And Christina Fanthorphe said, “Safety is about caring! Caring for myself, others and the brand I represent.”

Postal drivers operate over 213,000 vehicles throughout the country as the world’s largest civilian fleet. The job is a challenging one, as drivers face hazardous road conditions, gridlock, uneven terrain and inattentive drivers seven days a week. Driving one million miles is the equivalent of 334 times across the country or 40 times around the earth with not so much as a fender bender, and all without ever leaving the city limits.

“Our postal drivers are among the safest in the world,” said San Jose Postmaster Aron Jones. “The community deserves the best and safest carriers delivering mail. And every day our carriers deliver on the promise of giving their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”

Nationally, postal drivers log more than 1.5 billion miles annually while delivering to more than 157 million homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
