Background:
Just before Mother’s Day, San Ramon Carrier Robert Doppler was driving along his usual route when he came across a woman lying on the ground near her mailbox. She was bleeding from a head wound and unable to move. Doppler immediately called 911 and waited by the woman’s side until an ambulance arrived.
The 81-year-old woman had noticed the postal delivery vehicle in the neighborhood and decided to walk to the curb and wait for the carrier to reach her home. The woman lost her balance when she attempted to sit on an electrical box.
Doppler was joined by a UPS driver who was also nearby and both made sure that she was comforted until help arrived. Because of an illness, the woman had restricted movement and without assistance would not have been able to get up by herself.
The daughter of the woman wrote in a personal letter to the Postmaster about postal carrier Robert Doppler, “You might say oh you were in the right place at the right time, which would be true. But that alone doesn’t make people step up to help someone who’s badly hurt and can’t help themselves.” She went on to say that the family appreciated the assistance a mother of three, grandmother of eleven and great-grandmother of three received. And on Mother’s Day the family expressed they were able to hold their loved one a little tighter.
