El Sobrante Letter Carriers reach milestone, drive a million accident-free miles without ever leaving the city limits

El SOBRANTE, CA — Driving can be a challenging task on its own, let alone driving one million miles without so much as a fender-bender. Five El Sobrante Post Office letter carriers achieved this remarkable feat and will be honored at a special ceremony on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 8:00 am at the El Sobrante Post Office, 535 Appian Way, El Sobrante CA 94803.

Juan Reveles, Danny Ladines, Marvin Bartlett, Kreg Zaragoza and Adrienne Hawk will be inducted into the National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.”

The secret to staying accident-free includes many different safety tactics. According to Reveles, “Remember safety starts with you.” Hawk advises that “You should always check traffic before you pull out.” Zaragoza added, “We should approach every moment with the idea that our safety is paramount. Our jobs and lives are so impacted now by multi-tasking. If we step back for a moment we will find that our safety lies with our patience. Be Safe!”

Imagine driving the equivalent of 40 times around the earth without ever leaving the city limits, and doing so without an accident. The achievement is even more remarkable when you factor in the hazardous road conditions, gridlock, rural terrain, and the constant alertness for careless drivers along the way.

“Our postal drivers are keen on safety,” said Bay-Valley District Manager Darrel Stoke. “The truly remarkable achievement by our El Sobrante mail carriers demonstrates how postal employees continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”

Nationally, postal drivers log more than 1.5 billion miles annually while delivering to more than 159 million homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America. The job is a challenging one, as drivers face hazardous road conditions, gridlock, uneven terrain and inattentive drivers every day on their appointed rounds.

Each driver will be presented with a plaque from the Safety Council and automatic membership in the prestigious National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.” The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated one-million miles or 30 years of driving without being involved in a single preventable motor vehicle accident, a truly remarkable achievement according to the National Safety Council.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
