After 41 years of federal service, Oakland city carrier just won’t quit

Edgardo Tablan

OAKLAND, CA — Edgardo Tablan thinks he may have walked around the world without ever leaving his neighborhood. If he had a Fitbit, he might discover that he had logged enough steps to circle the globe more than once. And he’s not about to stop walking now even after he makes his last delivery on Thursday, October 31, 2019.

It will be a red-letter day for Tablan, who has carried mail for all of his 37 years, and the last 20 years on his current route, at the Oakland-Airport Station, 8495 Pardee Drive, Oakland, CA 94614.  He plans to keep on walking and travel the world.

Tablan has a total of 41 years of federal service, having served four years in the U.S. Air Force. While he put in a lot of steps delivering the mail, he definitely put in the miles delivering on his assigned route – one million miles to be exact – which got him inducted into the National Safety Council “Million Mile Club for logging a million accident-free miles. That’s pretty cool he thinks, logging enough miles to circle the globe four times without ever leaving the city limits.

Tablan recalls that on his 89th day of probation it was raining so hard he almost quit. But then he remembered our motto, “Neither rain, nor snow, nor…,” and decided to stick with it.

“I always felt that providing good service with a smile made my career that much better,” said Tablan.

MEDIA ALERT: Tablan will make his last rounds on Thursday, October 31. If interested in scheduling a photo or interview, call Ren Chen at (510) 599-1566.
