VISTA, CA — Two Vista letter carriers have joined an elite group of Postal Service employees who have individually driven more than a million, accident-free miles. They will be recognized at an 8:45 a.m. ceremony, Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Vista Carrier Annex, 1525 E. Vista Way, Vista, CA, 92084.

Letter Carrier Javier Torres has worked for the Postal Service for 35 years.  His entire career has been with the Vista Post Office and he has been assigned to his route for 30 years.

Letter Carrier Joseph Horne has worked for the Postal Service for 31 years.  He has been with the Vista Post Office for his entire career and has been on his route for 25 years.  Horne is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served as an Aviation Electrician for 6 years. His combined federal service is 37 years.

These carriers reached this proud moment in their career by doing the following: 

• Driving defensively — expecting the unexpected.
• Maintaining a safe distance between them and the vehicle in front of them.
• Being courteous, using turn signals, and obeying all laws.
• Keeping their options open — have a “what to do if I’m cut off” strategy.
• Turning off mobile devices when driving — no cell phones or texting.

“Javier and Joseph are dedicated to safety and excellent customer service,” says Vista Postmaster Jose Cerros, Jr. “Reaching 30 years without a preventable accident is an incredible achievement and an example to other employees. I’m very proud to have them as a part of the team here to serve the community of Vista.”

The National Safety Council’s Million Mile Club is an honor reserved for employees driving one million miles – or 30 years – without an at-fault accident. Postal Service drivers are among the safest in the world. The achievement of driving, in this case over one million miles, for more than 65 years, all accident-free is truly remarkable.
