New location selected for Imperial Main Post Office

IMPERIAL, CA – The U.S. Postal Service has identified a new preferred location for the Imperial Main Post Office.

At a September 26, 2019 public meeting, the Postal Service proposed relocating the post office to a new location within a defined area. The Postal Service has identified 820 N. Imperial Ave. as its preferred new location. In the coming months, the landowner will begin construction of a new shopping center, and the Post Office will occupy a free standing building in the center.

The Postal Service is currently in a leased building, and the property owner will not renew the lease. In addition, the Postal Service has outgrown the current space, so relocating to a larger space has become necessary. During the public comment period and at the public meeting, the community expressed a desire to see the new post office located within the City of Imperial and as close to the current location as possible. The new, future location at 820 N. Imperial satisfies this request.

When the new Post Office opens at its new location, the Postal Service anticipates providing the same services as are provided to our customers at the current location. The Postal Service plans to continue services at the existing Post Office until the replacement facility is open and operating as a Post Office, so there will be no interruption of service.

While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the Imperial community, the Postal Service properly considered community input and this decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives. To be self-sustaining, the Postal Service must make decisions that ensure it provides adequate and affordable postal services in a manner that is as efficient and economical as possible.
