Santa Barbara Mail Processing Center Installs New Package Sorting Machine

Get a rare behind-the-scenes look as USPS prepares for Xmas in September

What:

As part of our 10-Year Delivering for America Plan, over 100 package sorting machines have been deployed and installed throughout Postal Service mail processing centers around the country. One such machine, the Small Package Sorting System (SPSS) is being installed at the Santa Barbara P&DC.

USPS continues to remain on the cutting edge by proactively thinking ahead to provide more predictable service to our customers ahead of the much-anticipated holiday season. Full implementation of our 10-year plan will spur cash flow and savings to make $40 billion capital investment in our package processing network, facility upgrades and procurement of new processing equipment that will modernize operations and better equip us to continue providing world-class service.

Last year’s holiday season was unlike any other, for both USPS and customer alike. Demand for package delivery grew nearly 48 percent over SPLY, while nationwide, the American public relied on USPS to connect their holiday and essential correspondence as never before. The pandemic drove a surge in online shopping and e-commerce, creating a new level of ease for customers to shop from home.

As a result of this greater customer package demand, the Postal Service relied not only on our infrastructure of package sortation machines, but also on manual by-hand sortation of packages. The installation of these much-needed package sorting machines will be a game-changer, allowing for 12 times the package sortation capability than manual sortation and a better, more reliable service to our customers domestically and abroad.
