The possibility of having a Date Meets Zip is quite rare. It only comes around once every 100 years and for most post offices, this never occurs at all.
Compton is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California. Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and, on May 11, 1888, was the eighth city in California to incorporate. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 96,456. It is known as the "Hub City" due to its geographic centrality in Los Angeles County. Neighborhoods in Compton include Sunny Cove, Leland, Downtown Compton, and Richland Farms.
Residents and businesses are invited to bring their own postcards, letters or purchase items from the Compton Post Office and have it stamped with the commemorative postmark to remember this special once-in-a-lifetime occasion.
Jacob YunFei Gong, a 19-year-old Rhode Island School of Design student, designed the commemorative pictorial postmark incorporating the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monument in Compton and the birds of paradise flowers in the final product. Jacob is the son of Compton Post Office Postmaster Derry Feng. The postmark will be available for 30 days.
The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
