Oakland Clerk Retires after 42 Years of Postal Service

OAKLAND, CA — When Martha Mangle started her Postal career in 1979 the Sony Walkman was just hitting the shelves that provided the ability to conveniently listen to music on the go and became the first of many entertainment technology booms. When she started as a letter machine operator at the Oakland mail processing facility, Mangle witnessed firsthand the expansion of technology as zip codes, new businesses and package volumes expanded over the next several decades.

Mangle will report to work for the very last time after 42 years of dedicated service on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 9:00 am, at the Civic Center Post Office, 201 13th Street Oakland CA 94612.

Mangle’s postal journey was inspired by her family. Both her mother and sister worked for the Postal Service and she still believes there are many avenues for upward mobility and great benefits when working for the Postal Service.

Mangle will be leaving the Civic Center Post Office as a Procurement Clerk and says she will miss her coworkers and the camaraderie they developed all these years.

Mangle enjoys singing and plans to continue to sing in her ensemble “Sounds of Joy” and hopes to do some traveling in the future. Most of all she hopes to live each day fully according to her mantra is “What you speak into existence comes to light,” and we wish only positive things come to light for Martha.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
