Final Decision on Proposed Relocation of Sanford Station Post Office

Los Angeles, CA  —  On March 7, 2018, the Postal Service held a public meeting to discuss the possible relocation of the Sanford Station Post Office located at 3751 W 6th Street, Los Angeles, CA  90020 (“Former Property”), to a new location within the area. The Postal Service has carefully considered all the concerns expressed in those discussions, as well as in appeals and comments received after the public meeting. For the reasons set forth below, the Postal Service has decided to proceed with the proposal.

The Postal Service was notified by the landlord in August of 2017 that the 6th Street Property was to be redeveloped and the landlord would not renew the lease. The Postal Service has been looking for a replacement property since 2017. In mid-2021, the Postal Service identified 3500 W 6th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90020 (“New Property”), as its preferred new location.

Negotiations were recently completed with the new landlord, and a 20-year lease commitment has been secured. The opening of the new facility is expected within a few months and will provide the same level of service that is currently provided at the Sanford Station Post Office. In addition, one of the Postal Service’s goals is to secure a new customer service location as close to the current site as possible and within the same ZIP Code, which is the case with the New Property. The new facility is only two blocks away from the Former Property.

While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its customers and the community, the Postal Service properly considered community input and this decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives. Postal Service operations generally are not supported by tax dollars. To be self-sustaining, the Postal Service must make decisions which ensure it provides adequate and affordable postal services in a manner that is as efficient and economical as possible.

This is the final decision of the Postal Service with respect to this matter, and there is no right to further administrative or judicial review of this decision.
