The United States Postal Service and Connecticut Drive neighborhood are calling Foothill Farms Letter Carrier Willie Shannon a “hero.”

Shannon was delivering mail to the Connecticut Drive area when he noticed the balcony at one of the four-plex condominiums was on fire.  He jumped into action, knocked on the doors of the 4-unit building warning the residents of the fire and to get out. He called 911 and while informing them of the location of the fire, he grabbed one of the garden hoses and continued to spray water until the firefighters arrive.

The individual at that unit was asleep and woke up at the sound of the fire engines.

Although he notified his supervisors about being delayed because of a building fire, he did not explain all his actions that day. The Post Office was notified of his heroic actions by one of the customers who witnessed his brave actions that day.  “Without Willie stepping up and taking action, the whole building could have been lost and the residents inside could have been hurt or worse,” said Charlotte Hartwell.

“Willie’s direct concern and selflessness makes him a hero in the eyes of the Postal Service and to the community,” said Postmaster Angela Bye.  “We are often the eyes and ears of where we service.”
