McArthur Post Office dedicated in honor of longtime Postmaster, Janet Lucille Oilar

Last Friday, October 7, was an exciting day for the town of McArthur and specifically the Oilar family who was out in mass to celebrate the renaming of the McArthur post office to the Janet Lucille Oilar Postal Building.  In a dedication ceremony at the McArthur fairgrounds, Janet Oilar was celebrated by friends and family with stories of her life and contributions to her community.  Congressman Doug LaMalfa led the ceremony along with several prominent members of the US Postal Service.

Oilar served as the McArthur Postmaster for more than thirty-two years from 1961 to 1993.  She was an institution all unto herself and believed in her duty to serve her community with honor and perseverance.  Oilar took her job as postmaster very seriously and made it her mission to make sure every piece of mail was delivered to her town.  It was often said that if a package was received through the post office on Christmas Eve, Janet would make sure it was under your tree by Christmas morning.

Oilar also worked outside the Postal Service to bring recognition to the town of McArthur through her work as a member of the PTA, the Women’s Auxiliary and specifically her award-winning garden.  Featured in many magazines including Sunset and Birds and Blooms, Janet’s garden was a popular tourist stop.

The Oilar’s are and continue to be prominent members of the McArthur community for more than 50 years.  Janet’s legacy will continue to be recognized and celebrated for years to come.  The elegant plaque commemorating the diligent service of Janet Lucille Oilar can be viewed in the McArthur Post Office located at 4160 State Highway 299 East Suite 1.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
