Background:

President Biden signed S. 2938 into law, which designates the facility of the United States Postal Service located at, 120 4th Street in Petaluma, Califiornia, as the “Lynn C.Woolsey Post Office Building.”  The bill was introduced by Rep. Huffman.

A Seattle native, Woolsey attended the University of Washington where she met Terry Critchett.  Woolsey left school in 1957 before graduating and moved to Marin County where her and Terry were married and raised three children together; Joseph, Ed, and Amy.  After almost 10 years, her marriage to Critchett ended in divorce leaving Woolsey to raise her three children on her own.

With the help of government assistance, Woolsey began a secretarial job at a technology company where she managed to work her way to Human Resource manager.  By the time that job ended in 1980, Woolsey had remarried, had another child, and gone back to the University of San Francisco to complete her bachelor’s degree.

Woolsey began her 28-year political career in 1984 when she won a seat on the Petaluma City Council in Sonoma County.  In 1992 Woolsey elected to fill some very big shoes when Representative Barbara Boxer decided to run for the US Senate.  Woolsey won by a landslide more than doubling her competitor’s showing with 65% of the vote.  She ran on a platform that emphasized her experience as a single mother, businesswoman, and a local council member.  Representative Woolsey would continue this popularity throughout her political career until her retirement in 2013.

Woolsey had a long, and accomplished tenure as a State Representative serving on many committees including Budget, Government Operations, and the Education and Labor’s Workforce Protection Committee for which she was chair.  Woolsey was a huge advocate for children and families championing legislation and reform that protected the rights of workers, military families, and promoted the expansion and improvement of childcare programs. She was also an outspoken opponent to the Iraq was after 9/11 and sponsored legislation to withdrawal U.S. forces from Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2012, at the end of the 112th Congress, Woolsey announced her retirement capping off 20 years of service in the House of Representatives.
