Facility installs newest in sorting technology

The Berkeley Post Office is ready to deliver #PriorityYule this holiday season with the installation of the newest in package sorting machines.
The Small Delivery Unit Sorter (SDUS) gives a critical lift to large Post Offices and is capable of processing over 3,000 packages per hour during an operating window mainly in the early morning hours. It takes a minimum of four clerks to keep this machine running. With a continued trend in online shopping the need for expedited package sortation remains a key tool to help carriers make their rounds faster than ever before.

Background:
As a key component to the Delivering for America plan the USPS is modernizing its operations. A total of 249 new processing machines have been installed throughout the country since March 2021 as a part of a $40 billion investment in the postal network. The new equipment combined with increased operational precision will expand USPS’s daily package processing capacity to 60 million.
The USPS has the most sophisticated mail processing and delivery network in the world and continues to maintain a keen eye on product, performance, price and most importantly people to deliver right in the nick of time this holiday season.
The Postal Service’s preparedness for the holiday shipping and mailing season reflects strategic investments and operational precision improvements made as part of the Delivering for America plan.
Additional holiday hiring initiatives include:
