Facility utilizes newest in sorting technology to prepare for the season
What:
You’ve done the holiday shopping and ordering. Now the Sacramento Plant has the machines running. It’s starting to become quite a bounty of red and white. Processing priority packages. And packages of all shapes and sizes just in time for the holiday season.
Designed to handle small and medium parcels, the APPS can process over 200,000 pieces during an operating window, mostly in the evening, with 10-26 employees. The newest addition the SPSS can process 100,000 packages per hour with 10-16 employees. In all with four processing machines the Sacramento Facility has the capacity to process 625,000 packages per day.
Automated Guide Vehicles (AGV) add an additional robotic lift by completing small manual tasks so employees can focus on loading mail to its final destination.

Background:
As a key component to the Delivering for America plan the USPS is modernizing its operations. A total of 249 new processing machines have been installed throughout the country since March 2021 as a part of a $40 billion investment in the postal network. The new equipment combined with increased operational precision will expand USPS’s daily package processing capacity to 60 million.
The USPS has the most sophisticated mail processing and delivery network in the world and continues to maintain a keen eye on product, performance, price and most importantly people to deliver right in the nick of time this holiday season.
The Postal Service’s preparedness for the holiday shipping and mailing season reflects strategic investments and operational precision improvements made as part of the Delivering for America plan.
