PALM SPRINGS – The U.S. Postal Service will offer a special pictorial cancellation honoring renowned American author Edgar Rice Burroughs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Apr. 4 at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library in Palm Springs.

The cancellation, shown above and also known as a postmark, commemorates the unveiling of a star honoring Burroughs on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. That unveiling will occur at 11 a.m. on Apr. 4.

Palm Springs Post Office employees will set up a temporary station to administer the pictorial cancellation at the library, which is located near the Walk of Stars. The library will also be hosting an open house and a special exhibit displaying Burroughs' books, Tarzan movie items, and other memorabilia.

Burroughs, best known for creating the characters Tarzan and John Carter, lived in Palm Springs in 1935 and 1936.

Pictorial cancellations are postmarks offered by the Postal Service to commemorate local community events, such as fairs, conventions, or other types of local celebrations.

The Postal Service previously honored Burroughs with the issuance of a Forever Stamp. The stamp, featuring images of the author and his character Tarzan, was issued in Tarzana, CA in 2012.
