City Leader, USPS Carriers Kick Off Food Drive at May 10 Rally

What:

U.S. Postal Service mail carriers will join San Diego Councilmember Kent Lee at a rally at the San Diego Food Bank to highlight the impact of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive and to build momentum for their 2023 food drive, scheduled for Saturday, May 13.

The rally will include remarks by Councilmember Lee, San Diego Food Bank CEO Casey Castillo, NALC leaders, and the San Diego postmaster. Lee will be sharing a proclamation recognizing the importance and impact of the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

During the day of the food drive, the nation’s largest one-day food collection effort, USPS mail carriers do double duty—delivering mail and picking up food donations. Those donations are then distributed to local food banks, such as the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

Background:

2,600 mail carriers in the greater San Diego Region, from Encinitas to San Ysidro to Lakeside, and across the nation will partake in the 31st annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive on Saturday, May 13

Last year’s “Stamp Out Hunger” effort in the greater San Diego area netted more than 78 tons of food donations. The goal this year is to top that total.

Nationwide, the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive has collected more than 1.8 billion pounds of food since it began in 1993.
