Background:

On Friday, June 16th, Sunil Chanan will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1851 when Oakland appointed its first Postmaster, Amedee Marier.

Chanan will raise his right hand to take the official Oath of Office as the new Postmaster of Oakland at an 11:00 am ceremony at the Civic Center Oakland Post Office, 201 13th Street, Oakland, CA 94612. Chief Retail & Delivery Officer (CRDO) Dr. Joshua Colin will administer the oath.

Chanan, 51, began his U.S. Postal Service career 18 years ago as a letter carrier in Emeryville. He went on to become a supervisor and then manager in Berkeley. Chanan boosted his skills as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Danville before taking on the even larger role of Post Office Operations in the Bay-Valley District. He also served as a Management Associate in the office of CRDO in Washington, D.C. and as a Detail Executive in Memphis, TN.

“To be a Postmaster means holding the power to connect communities, bridge distances, and deliver dreams,” Chanan said. “My mission is to forge a seamless network of trust and efficiency, where every package arrives with care, every letter finds its way home, and every customer’s smile illuminates our purpose. Under PMG Louis DeJoy’s leadership and Delivering For America, the Postal Service’s 10-year plan, we are maintaining universal six-day mail delivery, stabilizing our workforce, and spurring innovation to meet the needs of our modern customers.”

He resides in Rodeo, CA with his wife Nina, and their 23-year-old twins, Anubhav and Anurag. In his spare time, he enjoys watching basketball, playing Cricket, and participating in various charity walks.

As Oakland Postmaster, Chanan oversees 515 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of over 395,000 pieces to 197,744 addresses, 315 delivery routes and 17,263 Post Office Boxes serving a population of over 453,560.
