Santa Clarita opens up Mail Processing Center
Get a rare behind-the-scenes look at package sorting systems

The Santa Clarita Mail Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) will handle hundreds of millions of pieces of mail and packages this holiday season. We will open up our doors to the media for one evening only.
We will show high-speed letter sorting operations and large bins of parcels being separated and sorted on the most advanced equipment in the country.
The Santa Clarita P&DC has 28 delivery bar code sorters (DBCS),
five delivery input output sorter systems (DIOSS), three automated flat sorting machines (AFSM) to help handle the expected volume increase.
This industrial environment provides great visuals of high-tech, high-speed processing, automated systems, and employees moving equipment.
The processing facility is 602,000 square feet with approximately one thousand employees.

Key accomplishments and areas of progress ahead of the 2024 peak holiday season include:
- Increasing daily processingcapacity to approximately 60 million: USPShas expanded its daily package processing capacity to approximately 60million. Since 2020, the Postal Service has nearly tripled its dailypackage processing capacity. Increased package processing capacityallows for packages to move through the postal network faster and USPSto lease temporary annexes to handle increases in holiday volume.
- Planning to hire only 7,500seasonal staff: With astabilized workforce and improved operating processes, the PostalService plans to hire 7,500 seasonal staff, compared with 10,000 lastyear.
- Revamping the postal delivery andprocessing network: Theorganization has dedicated nearly $17.3 billion from the plan’s $40billion self-funded investment budget to drive the transformation of thepostal network. This commitment is fueling the ongoing development of amodernized, efficient and technologically advanced postal network.
- Enhancing the postal deliveryfleet: USPS is significantlyupgrading the fleet with the addition of 106,000 new, more reliablevehicles. This includes 66,000 zero-emission electric vehicles,demonstrating the organization’s commitment to sustainability andenvironmental responsibility while ensuring reliable service.
- Offering new shipping services: The successful implementation of USPSGround Advantage and USPS Connect has led to a notable surge in shippingvolumes. These initiatives have not only expanded the Postal Service’scapacity but also improved its efficiency, ensuring a seamless shippingexperience for customers.
