SAN MATEO, CA — The U.S. Postal Service has opened a new state-of-the-art Sorting & Delivery Center (SDC) in San Mateo, California, marking a major milestone in its nationwide effort to modernize operations and improve service for the over 141,426 residents served by the San Mateo Post Office.

The facility, which holds 107 routes, and is responsible for over 64,000 deliveries per day, was unveiled during a special event attended by employees and their families.

The SDC is designed to also streamline packaging and mail processing, ensuring faster deliveries and a more efficient network with new processing equipment.

A development welcomed at the San Mateo Post Office which processes an average 8,000 packages per day.

“This transformation gives employees a new beginning,” said San Mateo City Carrier Michael Laois. “The new carrier cases, processing machine and overall renovations give me a new level of motivation.”

Sharing this with his family was also a great experience for Laois, who has served as a carrier in San Mateo for over a decade. “This was a great opportunity to show my kids where I work and for them to see first-hand this new environment and transformation.”

The modernized San Mateo SDC is one of 111 recently launched sorting and delivery centers across the nation, with approximately 300 more planned to open over the next few years.

SDCs are a culmination of the cultural change transforming the Postal Service, focused on innovation, collaboration, problem-solving and competition.

As the nation’s end-to-end carrier of choice, nearly $19 billion in investments have been made to revitalize the Postal Service’s national processing, transportation and delivery networks.

“We’re transforming our operations to invest in our future by meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said District Manager Aron Jones. “The new San Mateo SDC is part of our commitment to delivering faster, more reliable service while creating a better workplace for our dedicated employees.”

This initiative is part of a broader, $40 billion investment across the nation aimed at improving delivery reliability, efficiency, and employee working conditions.

In the Peninsula, these upgrades mean shorter wait times, improved package tracking, and enhanced safety measures for the USPS employees serving the state.

The Postal Service’s nationwide infrastructure investments continue to put the organization on a positive trajectory, ensuring it remains a trusted, high-performing delivery provider for every American household.
