Glendora Post Office Letter Carrier retires after four decades and one million accident-free miles without ever leaving the city limits

Glendora Post Office Letter Carrier retires after four decades

GLENDORA, CA —After 40 years of service Glendora Letter Carrier John Bromstead retired with a remarkable achievement, driving one million accident-free miles and earning an entry into the elite National Safety Council’s Million Mile Club.

Surrounded by the Glendora team, Bromstead received a final farewell and the honorable recognition of receiving his plaque from the National Safety Council and automatic membership in the prestigious National Safety Council “Million Mile Club.”

The secret to staying accident-free starts with having the right mindset, “I’ve been delivering mail for 40 years, and earning the Million-Mile Award means a lot. It’s not just about all the miles, it’s about showing up every day, staying alert, and caring about the people on my route,” said Bromstead.

Driving a million miles safely is commendable.

To add perspective, the moon is 238,900 miles from planet earth. Driving one million miles is the equivalent of doing that journey more than four times, all without a moving violation or accident, while maneuvering hazardous road conditions, gridlock, rural terrain, and avoiding careless drivers along the way.

The Postal Service has one of the world’s largest civilian fleets with 246,503 vehicles.

These vehicles link the nation’s 31,000 plus Post Offices and are driven by more than 341,000 letter carriers and truck drivers.

The Postal Service logs more than 1.2 billion miles annually delivering to America’s 148.6 million residences and 12.8 million businesses – 6 days a week.

“Safety is not just a buzz word, our postal drivers take safety very seriously,” said District Manager Cipriano Corona, “this truly remarkable achievement demonstrates how postal employees continue to deliver on the promise of delivering their best every day with care, courtesy and concern for the safety of others.”

The million-mile award is a lifetime enrollment, and it is given to drivers who have accumulated one-million miles or 30 years of driving without being involved in a single preventable motor vehicle accident.

Safe Driving Habits Start with Good Training

Driving for Postal Service is a privilege. All drivers must demonstrate safe-driving practices throughout their careers. Behind-the-wheel job candidates undergo rigorous screening, training, and certification process to earn credentials to operate a right-hand drive postal vehicle.
