What:

On August 18, 2022, Colorado Springs Letter Carrier will receive the Postmaster General Hero award for saving the life of a young girl last June. The Postal Service recognizes postal heroes for heroic acts from reuniting lost children with their parents, providing life-saving medical care, extinguishing fires, alerting customers to hazards, assisting at traffic accidents, and contacting authorities if they believe the customer is being targeted by scammers.

Who:

Letter Carrier Kimberly “Smitty” Smith and the Colorado Springs Postmaster Steve Begay will be available for interviews. The family of the young girl whose life was saved has been invited but have not confirmed due to school starting.

Background:

On June 15, 2022, Colorado Springs Letter Carrier Kimberly “Smitty” Smith (He/Him) went to deliver an Express Mail at the Ridgeview Place Apartments. While there the leasing office manager came running up to Smitty, dripping wet and franticly asked if he knew CPR. Smitty said yes and she led him to the on-premises swimming pool where a young girl was lying face down next to the pool. Smitty reached the girl and immediately turned her on her side and began to evacuate the stomach and lungs of water. He then proceeded to administer CPR and made sure 911 was called. There were no outwards signs of life when Smitty began CPR. As sirens were approaching the young girl began to breathe and cough – spitting up more water. The paramedics arrived shortly after and provided additional medical care. Smitty is an everyday hero who acted without hesitation to save the life of one of his customers.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
