Postal Service Reminds Customers to Clear a Path

HARTFORD – With the weather outside unpredictable, the Postal Service is asking customers to ensure paths and walkways to mailboxes are clear of ice and debris.

According to the most recent data available, there were over 15,800 slip, trip and fall incidents around the nation in fiscal year 2022, with 244 of these being in Connecticut.

Most slips, trips and falls involve letter carriers, and more than half of the accidents resulting in the victim missing more than one day of work. Approximately one third typically involve ice, while the rest involve stairs or household hazards.

By clearing a path to your mailbox, you ensure the safety of our employees and efficiency of your deliveries.

Ridgewood, NY, Letter Carrier Yohel Montesino, says he slipped and landed hard early in his career. Now he gives advice to other carriers.

“When it’s raining, I usually hold on to the rails. I look down and check the steps – especially at night and in the winter. I am also a careful driver,” said Montesino.

“I like working outside. The time goes quickly,” he added.
