Background:

Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born in Wilmington DE.  She was an American-Canadian anti-slavery activist, journalist, publisher, teacher, and lawyer. She was the first black woman publisher in North America and the first woman publisher in Canada. She was also the first black woman to attend law school in the US.

On January 5, 2021 legislation to designate the Wilmington DE Post Office building    as the “Mary Ann Shadd Cary Post Office” was signed into law. The legislation was championed by U.S. Congresswoman Lisa Rochester Blunt.
