LAKELAND, FL — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) today hosted a tour of its new Sorting and Delivery Center (S&DC) in Lakeland, inviting local media, business partners, community leaders, and Postal Customer Council (PCC) members to view the new facility’s improvements, state-of-the-art package sorting equipment, and fleet of Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs). Local Postal Service leaders highlighted how the improvements, part of nearly $21 billion invested in the national postal network over the past five years, improve service performance, enhance workplace conditions, and support faster, more reliable last-mile delivery in Lakeland and beyond.

Thanks to investments like these, USPS recently reported significant improvements during the holiday season surge, delivering 16 billion pieces of mail and packages in an average of 2.5 days, with better on-time delivery and higher customer satisfaction across the country.

“For customers and businesses here in Lakeland, this new Sorting and Delivery Center will improve outcomes for our community, strengthening daily delivery while helping our teams work more safely and efficiently,” said Bryan Lalonde, Postmaster, Lakeland. “Investments like these represent more than a physical upgrade; they reflect a commitment to our employees, our customers, and the future of the Postal Service.”

The Lakeland S&DC serves more than 52,000 customers across four ZIP Codes, including 65 centralized routes. In Florida writ large, the Postal Service employs more than 38,000 men and women and serves more than 10.7 million addresses, six and often seven days a week.

Sorting and Delivery Centers support a modern delivery model

As USPS expands its role as the nation’s end-to-end carrier of choice, the creation of Sorting and Delivery Centers has been a core part of transformation and modernization efforts. Over recent years, USPS has opened more than 150 S&DCs across the country, positioning the organization for success by:

  • Improving the flow of both mail and packages with new package sorting machines.
  • Expanding business’ local, regional, and nationwide market reach and delivery times — in many cases, same-day or next-day.
  • Improving workplace conditions that bolster employee outcomes and morale.
  • Reducing costly and inefficient delivery trips to support financial and environmental goals.

“State-of-the-art facilities and vehicles like these, along with the experts who manage and run them, help us run a tighter operation — more efficient, more capable, and better positioned to compete,” said Richard Fermo, District Manager, Florida 2. “Across central Florida, this work is designed to improve flow and expand capability — while also delivering a more modern workplace for our employees and a stronger experience for customers and business partners.”
