Background:
On July 18, 2018, Senate bill S.3237, legislation to designate the Columbus, Georgia Post Office at 120 12th Street, Columbus, GA 31901, as the “Richard W. Williams, Jr., Chapter of the Triple Nickles (555th P.I.A)” was introduced. On December 14, 2018, the measure was signed by the President, and became Public Law 115-319.
The bill was introduced in honor of Columbus-area veterans who served in military units that originated from the Army’s first all-black parachute unit, which was activated at Fort Benning (Georgia) in December 1943.
Under Captain Richard W. Williams, Jr.’s leadership, the 555th Triple Nickles Parachute Infantry Battalion bravely defended our nation during World War II.
The Richard W. Williams, Jr., Chapter of the Triple Nickles currently has a membership of approximately 61 veterans in Columbus, Georgia, and the surrounding area who served in various military units that were built from the Triple Nickles, including the 173rd Airborne, 2nd Ranger Company Airborne, 1st Cavalry Division, and the 24th Infantry Division.
The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
