A Million Miles and Still Trucking

Atlanta Postal Service employee honored for safe driving

Lamar Powell, Tractor Trailer Operator

ATLANTA, GA — While many drivers may think luck plays a role in avoiding accidents, Lamar Powell, a Tractor Trailer Operator in Atlanta, knows that safety relies on experience and attention. With 44 years on the road, Powell emphasizes that focus and defensive driving are essential for success.

Powell has achieved an extraordinary milestone by driving one million miles for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) without a single accident—enough to circle the Earth 40 times. In recognition of this remarkable accomplishment, he received a plaque from the National Safety Council and automatic lifetime membership in the esteemed “Million Mile Club.”

This award honors drivers who have reached one million miles or have 30 years of driving without a preventable motor vehicle accident, a significant achievement acknowledged by the National Safety Council.

“After 44 years without an accident, I am proud to receive this award,” Powell stated at a recent U.S. Postal Service Logistics Symposium. “The key to safe driving is to take your time and always be aware of your surroundings.”

Atlanta Logistics Manager Todd Murphy praised Powell, saying, “For over 44 years, he has consistently been attentive and aware. He is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure safety.”

The daily operations of the U.S. Postal Service depend on a vast network of dedicated individuals and advanced technologies that work together to collect, transport, process, and deliver the nation’s mail. Each year, USPS processes and delivers more than 116 billion pieces of mail and packages, averaging over 318 million pieces daily.

Logistics are fundamental to the Postal Service’s operations, utilizing a fleet of more than 246,000 vehicles—one of the largest civilian fleets in the world—to fulfill the mission of delivering to every address. Committed to sustainability, the Postal Service operates 30,673 alternative fuel-capable vehicles and is rolling out the highly anticipated Next Generation Delivery Vehicle across facilities nationwide.
