Background:
On September 16, 2024, U.S. Representative Sanford D. Bishop, Jr introduced H.R. 9600, a bill to designate the facility of the U.S. Postal Service located at 119 Main Street in Plains, Georgia as the “Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter” Post Office.
The bill was signed by the President on January 4, 2025, and became Public Law 118-268.
In honor of their enduring legacy of service and compassion, the Postal Service acknowledges the remarkable contribution of the former President Jimmy Carter and his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter. This dynamic couple is celebrated for their unwavering commitment to humanitarian efforts, community engagement, and mental health advocacy. The Carters have inspired generations with their dedication to improving lives both domestically and globally.
As the longest-serving presidential couple, the Carters dedicated their post-White House years to various philanthropic endeavors, including The Carter Center and their work with Habitat for Humanity.
This dedication ceremony will celebrate the Carters’ significate contributions to society, and the building will serve as a lasting symbol of their legacy and inspire future generations to engage in service and advocacy for those in need.
