Background:
Former U.S. Representative Drew Ferguson introduced H.R. 8919, a bill to designate the facility of the U.S. Postal Service located at 151 Highway 74 S, Peachtree City, Georgia as the “SFC Shawn McCloskey” Post Office.
The bill was signed by the President on January 4, 2025, and became Public Law 118-256.
Sergeant First Class Shawn P. McCloskey, a dedicated and courageous soldier, native of Hudson, New York, spent his formative years in communities of Kennesaw and Peachtree City, Georgia. His journey into the military began in January 2002 when he enlisted into the United States Army with aspirations of joining the prestigious ranks of the Special Forces. Demonstrating exceptional skill and determination, SFC McCloskey successfully navigated the rigorous Special Forces Qualification Course, culminating in his graduation in May 2004. This achievement not only earned him a revered Green Beret designation but also solidified his role as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant, where he would leverage his unique expertise to support complex operational missions.
On September 16, 2009, at the age of 33, SFC McCloskey made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when his vehicle was struck by and improvised explosive device during a mounted patrol in Ghur Ghur, Afghanistan. At the time of his untimely death, he was actively engaged in critical operations supporting combat missions with Company B, 3 Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
This dedication serves not only as a remembrance of SFC McCloskey bravery, commitment to service, and the profound impact that he had on his community and country, but also as a reminder of the countless servicemen and women who served in defense of our freedom and aims to foster a spirit of gratitude and tribute within the community.
