Demand for Passports from Valley Isle Residents Remains High
What:
The Kahului Post Office is hosting its 4th weekend Passport Fair event, at which postal employees will accept applications for new U.S. passports.
“The demand for passports remains very high, “ said Kahului Postmaster Nerisha Niu. “The COVID-19 pandemic prompted many people to postpone traveling and applying for a passport. Now that vaccinations are widespread and travel restrictions have eased, demand has skyrocketed.
“At our last Passport Fair, we even processed applications for grateful out-of-state visitors, who said that the wait for passport application appointments where they’re from was 3-4 months long.
“The purpose of this event is to make the process of applying for new passports easy for Maui residents. A lot of people, especially those with schoolchildren, don’t have the time during the week to visit a post office to submit their passport applications.”
This is the fourth USPS Passport Fair held at the Kahului Post Office since March. More than 220 new passport applications were processed at the office’s first three Passport Fairs, held in March, May and June.
