“It is of great pleasure to announce the Captain Cook unveiling of the Hawaiian mural on April 21,” said Kealakekua clerk Dorothy Andrade-Wegner, who helped facilitate the mural’s placement. “It’s with great pride and honor to recognize the amazing, yet beautiful work of artist Estria Miyashiro, his crew, and the keiki of Ke Kula ‘O Ehunuikaimalino.

“As I reminisce of our Hawaiian culture, mo’olelo, and our Kupuna, I’d like to share this simply: Ke alakaʻi ʻia nei mākou e ke Akua a me ko mākou mau kūpuna, a ma o lākou lā i loaʻa ai kēia moʻolelo ʻano ʻē a kūpono hoʻi, e kono ana i ko mākou kaiaulu e komo pū i loko o kona nani kamahaʻo, a e kaʻanalike aku me nā mea a pau o ko mākou kaiaulu i mea e nanea pū ai kākou.” (We are guided by ke Akua and our kupuna, and through them we have this unique, yet very appropriate mo’olelo to invite our community to absorb its breathtaking beauty and share with everyone in our community to enjoy.)

The mural depicts the mo‘olelo (legend) of Kua, the namesake of Kealakekua, and serves as a visual resource for both the local community and visitors to learn about indigenous stories and Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The project aligns with the Ala Kahakai NHT’s mission to preserve and interpret Native Hawaiian culture and natural resources along the 175-mile coastal trail corridor, which includes culturally significant sites and over 200 traditional land divisions.
