United States Postal Inspection Service and United States Postal Service to Educate Customers
What:
This week is National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) and the focus is on veterans as the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and the AARP Fraud Watch Network continue to promote Operation Protect Veterans, a joint national campaign that highlights vet-related scams and fraud schemes. The USPIS will have information booths set up at the Central Iowa VA and Main Des Moines Post Office, providing an opportunity for veterans, families of veterans, and the general public to learn more about scams, fraud, identity theft, and how to avoid becoming a victim of these types of crimes.
When and Where:
| Wednesday, March 6, 2019 | Thursday, March 7, 2019 |
|---|---|
| Central Iowa VA 3600 30th St Des Moines, IA |
Des Moines Main Post Office 1165 2nd Ave Des Moines, IA |
According to a recent AARP survey, veterans are twice as likely to fall victim to scammers as the population at large. Veterans reported they are targeted by scams directly related to their military service or the veterans’ benefits they receive.
The USPIS website https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/, AARP Fraud Watch website https://action.aarp.org/site/SPageNavigator/FWN_OperationProtectVeterans.html, and the Federal Trade Commission website https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/national-consumer-protection-week provide more information and resources about this year’s theme as well as NCPW as a whole.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
