On January 5, 2021, legislation to designate the Post Office located at 101 South 16th Street in Clarinda, IA, as the “Jessie Field Shambaugh Post Office Building” was signed into law by the President. This legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congresswoman Cynthia Axne.
Mrs. Shambaugh is often referred to as the "Mother of 4-H." In 1910, she designed a three-leaf-clover pin with the letter "H" on each leaf, representing "head," "hands" and "heart." In 1910, she added fourth leaf for "home" which later became "health." The pin was used as an award medal for club work. "The motto for all the clubs was: TO MAKE OUR BEST BETTER. All the club activities were meant to enrich country living.
The United States Postal Service is hosting a public dedication ceremony on Monday, May 24th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Post Office. Congresswoman Axne, members of the family, and other dignitaries will be on hand to celebrate this event.
