Congressman and USPS Officials to Honor Corp. Benjamin Desilets

Friday, May 19 at 10:00 am Ceremony at Elmwood IL Central Park

CHICAGO, IL — The Elmwood Post Office will have its building named in honor of Corp. Benjamin Desilets, at a ceremony, Friday, May 19 at 10 a.m. at the Central Park in Elmwood located at 114 Magnolia Street.

Representative Darin LaHood, 18th District introduced a bill in December 2022 to designate the Elmwood Post Office as “Corporal Benjamin Desilets Post Office.” 

Joining Rep. LaHood at the ceremony will be USPS Illinois 2 District Manager Tangela Bush, Mark Wilson, Post Office Operations Manager and Bernice Joseph, Manager, Customer Relations, Illinois 2 District. The ceremony is open to the public.

Corporal Desilets graduated from Elmwood High School in Illinois in 2004. He left for boot camp on Labor Day 2004 and graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego in December 2004. Later, he was assigned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Cpl. Desilets deployed to Ramadi, Iraq, in August 2005. In February of 2007, he deployed again to Fallujah, Iraq. On May 22, 2007, 21- year-old Corporal Desilets was driving the lead vehicle returning from a mission in the dark of the night where he was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Al Anbar province of Iraq.

HR 6404 To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 114 North Magnolia Street in Elmwood, Illinois, as the ‘‘Corporal Benjamin Desilets Post Office’’.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. CORPORAL BENJAMIN DESILETS POST OFFICE.

(a) DESIGNATION. —The facility of the United States Postal Service located at 114 North Magnolia Street in Elmwood, Illinois, shall be known and designated as the ‘‘Corporal Benjamin Desilets Post Office’’.
(b) REFERENCES. —Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the facility referred to in subsection (a) shall be deemed to be a reference to the ‘‘Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Post Office Building’’.
