NEW ALBANY, IN – The Postal Service will honor Lead Sales and Service Associate (LSSA) Bertie Faulkner at a special ceremony on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at 8:30 a.m., at the New Albany Post Office, 145 E Elm St., 47150.  Faulkner will receive the Postmaster General Hero Award, which honors employees who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Earlier this year, while working at the New Albany Post Office retail window, Faulkner suspected a customer was attempting to cash a “raised” money order (“Raised” refers to a money order whose value is illegally changed to a higher amount than what was originally purchased).  Faulkner attempted to stall the customer until the office could alert authorities.  The man and his accomplice, who was waiting in the car, abruptly left before police arrived.  She was surprised when the same man came to the office several weeks later and tried to cash another raised money order.  This time, the acting Postmaster and Faulkner were able to call the police, who arrived in time to arrest the suspect.  Postal Inspectors lead the investigation. 

“Bertie’s quick actions saved the Postal Service a tremendous amount of money by getting these criminals off the streets.  In this situation, the suspects were trying to cash $2 money orders for $200,” said Postal Inspector Clint Springer.  Springer will be in attendance at the ceremony to honor Faulkner.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
