INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Letter Carrier Leo McElroy was celebrated for 50 years of federal service during a ceremony at the Indianapolis Mapleton Post Office today. McElroy is affectionately called “Big Mac” by his coworkers.

McElroy, who began his postal career in Apr. 1978, is also a US Army Veteran. He shared stories from his long career during the event. Asking for a tissue, he became emotional talking about his first days in training and becoming long-time friends with his on-the-job trainer, Gilbert Covington, who passed away earlier this year. To highlight how much has changed since McElroy started working for USPS, Acting Indianapolis Postmaster Andrea Dallas gave a rundown of prices for items in 1978. For example, in 1978, a Big Mac cost 90 cents.

Acting Indiana District Manager Le Gretta Goodwin read a letter from Postmaster General David Steiner and presented a 50-year certificate, 50-year pin, and other gifts. In attendance were McElroy’s coworkers, friends, and family who enjoyed a meal together after the celebration.
