Media tour offers behind-the-scenes look at new sorting technology, facility upgrades and next generation delivery vehicles

HAMMOND, IN — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) today hosted a tour of its new Sorting and Delivery Center (S&DC) in Hammond, inviting local media to view the new facility’s improvements, state-of-the-art package sorting equipment, and Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs). Thanks to investments like these, USPS recently reported significant improvements during the holiday season surge, delivering 16 billion pieces of mail and packages in an average of 2.5 days, with better on-time delivery and higher customer satisfaction across the country.
The Hammond S&DC serves 46,131 customers across three ZIP Codes, including 35 centralized routes. In Indiana, the Postal Service employs more than 13,400 men and women and serves more than 3.1 million addresses, six and often seven days a week.
Sorting and Delivery Centers support a modern delivery model
As USPS expands its role as the nation’s end-to-end carrier of choice, the creation of Sorting and Delivery Centers has been a core part of transformation and modernization efforts. Over recent years, USPS has opened more than 150 S&DCs across the country, positioning the organization for success by:
